Psych injury caused by 'positive, constructive' performance management

An employer made "objectively positive" efforts to performance manage an employee and did not set him up to fail, a tribunal has ruled in rejecting his psych injury appeal.

A few months after the employee joined the federal Department of Health's investigation business management team in April 2018, the employer told all team members to complete three 'entity analysis' (EA) cases per week.

During a November meeting, a manager raised concerns about the employee failing to complete three EA cases each week and leaving his desk for extended periods without informing colleagues.

A mid-cycle performance review that followed rated the employee as 'partially effective' and the manager arranged for him to attend one-on-one training sessions twice a week, undertake report writing and Microsoft Excel courses, and undergo peer reviews...
