Novel discrimination claim "won't be the last", lawyer warns

A man's claim that an art gallery's "ladies' lounge" discriminated against him might be tempting to dismiss as "ridiculous", but it's part of a broader conversation that's all-too relevant to HR, a lawyer says.

The claim was made by a visitor to Tasmania's Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) after he was denied entry to the roped-off lounge. He argued that having paid full entry, he should also be entitled to enter the lounge and view the art within.

Mona, on the other hand, argued the lounge was a participatory installation which included the "performance" of visitors being granted, or denied, entry on the basis of gender...
