Non-renewal of contract was based on pregnancy, $37k comp ordered

An employer discriminated against a pregnant employee when it failed to extend her temporary fixed-term contract, after planning future work for her to do, a commission has ruled.

Children's Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service initially employed the project officer on a temporary fixed-term basis between 31 July 2017 and 4 February 2018.

The employee's contract was extended twice, however, to 31 March 2018 and then to 3 June 2018.

When she didn't receive a further extension after this time, the employee claimed the employer had breached the State Anti-Discrimination Act. She argued it hadn't renewed her contract because she was pregnant, despite further planned work, and that it had calculated the end date of her final contract according to her due date...
