Inside a talent strategy shift: from buying to building

Shifting a talent strategy from buying to building requires extra focus on development to fill skills gaps, says an HR leader whose organisation has doubled its internal promotions in the past year.

Luke Fleming, who has been with ICC Sydney since it opened, and in his current role for about two years, is one of many leaders who have been developed and promoted internally.

He says a scramble to replenish talent lost during the pandemic in response to renewed demand for the employer's services – last financial year it hosted a record number of events – has seen it both speed up the hiring process for external talent, and start pushing internal talent into higher roles more quickly.

Now HR is working to ensure those who have been moved up in haste aren't "missing" any skills, and supplying training where required...
