Ineffective communication 'partly to blame' for absent worker's dismissal

A "lack of effective communication" between directors about an "unreliable" worker's absence contributed to his dismissal, the Fair Work Commission has found.

The legal assistant for Cornerstone Legal made a general protections application involving dismissal, but the employer objected on the basis it hadn't sacked him, arguing he had abandoned his employment.

The employer told the Commission that since hiring the employee in January last year, there had been issues with his attendance, including unexplained absences, tardiness, leaving for appointments on short notice, and misusing his leave entitlements...
