'Hesitant' employee given one last chance to proceed with casual conversion

An employer has been directed to give a casual employee who sought conversion to permanent one final chance to sign a full-time contract, despite his two-month "hesitation" eroding its trust.

The casual storeman for food and beverage distributer JFC Australia Co requested conversion to permanent employment in March this year, however his employer refused, and he applied to the Fair Work Commission to deal with a dispute.

The Commission subsequently directed the employer to offer the employee full-time employment by 20 May and said he must respond by 23 May.

The employee signed the offer, but due to his unfitness for work at the time, the employer sought medical clearance prior to settling on a start date for his permanent employment...
