"Hammers on screws" won't fix talent problems

Talent management leaders are under such pressure to deliver solutions quickly that many aren't properly identifying problems first, but there is a way to conduct root cause diagnosis quickly and simply, an expert says.

The fact talent is now a top priority for CEOs means leaders in the field are getting more C-suite attention, but also receiving less patience, says Jasleen Kaur, a senior principal in Gartner's HR research and advisory practice.

"Gone are the times when we could turn to our CEO and say, let me take this back, do a little digging, and get back to you," she told Gartner's recent ReimagineHR conference.

"By the time we're done with the probing [and] solution design, we've missed our boat; the CEO attention is gone..."
