Employee had no right to make "unfettered demands" for flexibility

An employee's "vigorous pursuit" of and perceived entitlement to flexible work arrangements were misplaced, a commission has ruled in finding an employer acted reasonably in rejecting her "unfettered demands".

The Queensland Department of Environment and Science senior environmental officer submitted a flexible work application (FWA) in March last year, requesting to work from home three days per week.

The employee said the arrangement would improve her health and wellbeing, as it would cut down on her "unnecessary" and "lengthy" commute, give her more time to spend with her family, and help her manage her fatigue.

But the employer denied her request in April, stating that any work-from-home agreement needed to "factor in the long-term imposition on the team and the actual flexibility being achieved through the request"...
