"Demanding" work environment didn't excuse offensive behaviour

A stressful and demanding work environment cannot excuse inappropriate behaviour towards subordinates, a tribunal has ruled in rejecting a senior employee's disciplinary action appeal.

In April last year, Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service told the intensive care unit clinical director that it had substantiated an allegation that he had behaved inappropriately, offensively and aggressively towards subordinate medical officers, and flagged his potential removal from his role.

In appealing the employer's finding, the employee told the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission that the allegation, conclusion and proposed discipline were "part of a series of pre-planned, intimidatory bullying tactics wilfully perpetrated by [a manager]"...
