You've received a suspicious medical certificate... now what?

Faced with a questionable medical certificate, employers are within their rights to seek confirmation of authenticity – with or without an employee's consent, a lawyer says.

Hall & Wilcox partner Fay Calderone notes there are three main types of medical certificates now available online, from websites that:

  • require employees to complete an online form and participate in a video (tele-health) consultation (e.g. Qoctor and Sicky);
  • require employees to submit a form that a medical practitioner reviews before providing a certificate (e.g. InstantScripts and Updoc); and
  • allow a person to buy a replica of a medical certificate...
