Upskilling now "non-negotiable", despite wary CEOs

CEOs perceive five key challenges to upskilling, but a people leader says it's up to HR to highlight the business case for developing employees.

For many years, a fear among leaders has persisted that upskilling investment will be wasted on employees who then leave, says PwC head of people and culture Catherine Walsh.

And PwC's latest CEO research shows that 44% of chief executives still rank retention as their top or second-greatest concern about upskilling.

However, there has been a "real shift" in people recognising that upskilling is necessary, Walsh tells HR Daily.

"It's just a non-negotiable. People expect to come to an employer, build a great career, be developed in that career, be rewarded appropriately, and have flexibility," she says...
