Religious Discrimination Bill "really difficult for employers to navigate"

The Religious Discrimination Bill could potentially create an "impossible situation" for employers, a diversity expert has told Parliamentary hearings.

Following the Bill's introduction to the House of Representatives last November, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights has been holding an inquiry into the issues it raises, and has received nearly 200 submissions.

In Committee hearings this month, Diversity Council Australia CEO Lisa Annese warned that in its current form, the Bill creates a "hierarchy of rights" – particularly, it privileges the right to a religious belief over other human rights.

"Not only do we have problems with it in itself in terms of what the implications might mean for people from other identity groups, potentially; there's also a practical element here in the sense of what that might mean for an employer in terms of their objective...
