People managers struggling as personal issues enter the workplace

Too many people leaders are feeling overwhelmed by the task of helping team members navigate challenging life events, a new report shows.

Traditionally "unsaid" and taboo topics such as domestic violence, divorce, death and pregnancy complications are increasingly entering the workplace vernacular, but managers don't always know how to respond with empathy, according to the Circle In research, involving more than 500 participants.

"The results are quite shocking, with managers now under such pressure to be a people leader and a counsellor, but without any scaffolding from their workplace," says Circle In co-founder Jodi Geddes.
