Lack of preparation undermining critical conversations

In an environment of increasing employee anxiety, poorly managed workplace conversations are causing communication breakdowns and bullying accusations, a workers' compensation expert says.

"Employees are in a heightened state of anxiety, and in some instances grief that their lives have changed so much," says Morag Fitzsimons, leader of insurance broker Lockton's employee care business.

This is flowing through to workers' compensation claims, where an increasing number involve bullying and harassment, she says.

It's clear in many cases that communication is breaking down, Fitzsimons notes, and one of the causes of this is a lack of preparation for difficult or challenging conversations...
