High achiever's psych injury caused by "appropriate" management action

An employer has defended the way it managed a "high achiever", who suffered a psychological injury after behaviour issues were raised during a routine personal development meeting.

In March 2019, the ATO employee submitted a complaint against two managers following a February "check-in", claiming they pressured her to accept a redundancy and made false allegations about her.

The employee said that when she declined the redundancy offer, she was warned that her leave request to travel to Croatia for three months might not be approved. She alleged one of the managers then accused her of making long personal phone calls at work, not engaging with all team members, and not recording her times accurately.

A week after making the complaint the employee left work early and attended her doctor. Two days later she lodged a workers' compensation claim for severe anxiety and was certified unfit for work...
