Case study: Listening skills transform mental health conversations

Equipping employees with better listening skills is having a major impact on mental health conversations, which is in turn building better workplace connections.

American Express is focusing on ensuring employees "feel comfortable about talking about mental health", says Gavin Devane, SME acquisition director.

The organisation partnered with 'Real Mates' to launch a program in February 2020 to help provide mental health support and non-clinical coaching to those who are struggling with their mental health.

Though it was conceived prior to the pandemic, its timing couldn't have been more perfect, says Devane, who was among the first group to be certified as Real Mates.

"It has nothing to do with these people being certified to be counsellors or to solve anybody's problem. The idea here is that people just need to be listened to," he tells HR Daily...
